On a chilly and windy Thursday, March 7, 2013, in a joint effort between MCCM and the Chattanooga Food Bank(CAFB) we were able to distribute approximately 20,000 pounds of food to 276 of our client families.
Clients began assembling in our driveway early for the opening time of 10a.m. Jennifer Hasnani, Rhonda Mines, and Linda Hooper of MCCM and Laura Kilpatrick of CAFB handled client check-in. The task involved going out to the client car, handing them a questionnaire to be filled in and signed, picking up the client’s bar-coded MCCM food bank card, hurrying to the computer station so the card could be scanned, and then back to the client vehicle with a pink Bonus Days ticket. Traffic through the MCCM facility went quickly and smoothly because of the dedication and endurance of these women.
CAFB and MCCM folks, assisted by Wesley Brown who volunteered his forklift and his skills, quickly unloaded the pallets of food from the trucks and set about the task of unpacking the pallets and filling the blue shopping bags to be handed to clients. Many thanks to WalMart for donating the shopping bags.
Clients stopped at four stations in our driveway. At station one they received frozen chicken, pork patties, and two hams. At station two, canned goods, cereal and vitamin water were given, and at station three 20 pounds of frozen french fries were placed in the client vehicle. Finally at station four the pink tickets were collected for reuse
and the clients were directed out of the driveway toward Shady Grove Road and Valley View Highway. Our Marion County Constable, “Doodle” Richardson, directed traffic to and from our facility.
Many, many thanks to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make this event a success. Since this was our first attempt, much of what we did was learned as “on the job training”. Our volunteers’ creativity, flexibility and adaptability are greatly appreciated. Click HERE to see photos of the event.
The next Bonus Days event will be April 25th with a rain-date of May 2.
