July 25 Bonus Days

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

To our regular volunteers and to our Bonus Days volunteers who made this event a success, please know how much we appreciate you.

Much love,

Gary and Ginger

Bonus Days A Success

On a bright and beautiful Thursday morning, July 25, a good sized gathering of our wonderful volunteers gathered outside of MCCM at 9am to organize the third Bonus Days Event at MCCM this year.

Jen and Marissa , Mason , and Bryant are “cool” in the refrigerated truck setting out the heavy blue bags of frozen food while Sheila , Connie, and Susie do the delivering.

Melissa Blevins and her awesome crew from the Chattanooga Area Food Bank delivered the food to us and stayed to help us distribute it. Thanks to Melissa and her “Hunger Heroes” for their hard work, before, during, and after the event.

We learned from the previous two events and we preregistered 325 of our neighbor families to receive food giving them appointment times to arrive to pick up frozen meats, including a 15 pound turkey and a ham, frozen fruits and vegetables, and a goody bag with a variety of items.

Delivering bags to neighbor’s car.

We had no traffic jams and no other incidents occur because our neighbors to receive food arrived at their appointment time. Our neighbors expressed appreciation that they did not waste time or gasoline waiting in the hot sun.

Another neighbor receives food.

Our volunteers said that appreciated that the work load was more evenly distributed and that they had time to take a break, grab a bottle of water, and catch their breath.

The only disappointment of the day was that 23 families did not show up to pick up food which was reserved for them. We are working on ways to minimize the “no-shows” next time.

MCCM Food Bank Need is Growing

Because of the Critical Need, the article following is reprinted from the August Newsletter:

The need for the services of the Marion County Community Ministries (MCCM) Food Bank is growing. In 2010 we distributed 3,759 boxes of food to 2,666 families in Marion County. In 2012 we distributed 6,179 boxes of food to 4,289 families. During the first six months of 2013 we are on a pace to exceed all previous years distributing 3,515 boxes to 2,491 families.

In 2009 we had approximately 1,000 families in our files and today we have more than 2,000 families who seek our services.

The cost to us of buying food is also up, not only in the price per box of food but also because we are distributing more boxes of food. Please note that in 2013 we have been able to reduce the cost per box by 24 cents. In 2013 we have held three Bonus Days events to provide additional food for our neighbors. Approximately 150,000 pounds of food for these three events was provided by the US Department of Agriculture, the Tennessee Food Assistance Program, and the Chattanooga Area Food Bank at no cost to MCCM.

The following table compares donations and food costs for the first six months of 2010 through 2013

The first six months of 2012 and 2013 show that donations have not kept pace with our expenditures for food. It should be noted that during the last half of each year donations of money and food drives increase and we expect that we will make up some of the deficit in the fall.

Figure 1 through Figure 4 shows the dramatic increase in activity for the food bank from 2013 to 2010. Detailed results are available on our website at http://mccmfbgn.org/gn/results.html.

Clearly we need your help if we are to continue to fight hunger in Marion County.

How can you help?

  • Pray for this ministry and for our neighbors who are hungry
  • Organize a food drive at your church, place of work, or organization
  • Donations of money – we buy food at a substantial discount and we do not pay sales tax
  • Spread the word about the food bank need for help

Volunteers Needed

In recent months we have lost several of our most faithful volunteers. As a result we need folks who can become regular volunteers and give 2 hours of their time per month.

Please ask your friends and let Ginger know.

MCCM Board Meeting

The next meeting of the MCCM Board is July 9th at 6:00 p.m. at Jasper FBC. Volunteers, if you have an item you would like the board to discuss please just respond to the email message with your item.

Next Bonus Days Event is July 25

MCCM and the Chattanooga Area Food Bank (CAFB) will partner again to host another Bonus Days event on July 25, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Bonus Days provides our clients with approximately 20 pounds of frozen meats and vegetables and assorted goodies. We called it “Bonus Days” because the visit does not count against the allotted visits for each client.

A Bonus Days event requires a lot of volunteers to handle the process of directing traffic and assembling and distributing the food kits. If your organization would like to volunteer to help at one of these events please let Ginger England know at 423-228-9004.

The success of the event in April was marred by having more of our neighbors turn out than we anticipated. A long line of cars began forming as early as 7:00 a.m. and by 10:00 a.m. the line was far down Valley View Highway and by 11:30 a.m. we had run out of food after serving over 300 families.

In order to minimize the impact on our neighborhood and on our neighbors we are preregistering clients. The preregistration process gives each neighbor an appointment time to arrive at MCCM to collect their food. CAFB will be bringing food kits for 325 families this time and we will cutoff registrations at that number.
